Saturday Night Live is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, rolling out A-list hosts and musical guests, returning cast members, and secret cameo appearances leading up to a massive anniversary special in February. We used Canvs to take a look at the first two months of the season.
The most popular episode in terms of overall reactions from the season to date was the premiere, featuring host Chris Pratt, which garnered nearly 38,000 reactions. The Nov. 1 episode, featuring former SNL cast member Chris Rock, came in second with just over 25,000 reactions. Viewers were most “excited” about the return of another former cast member, Bill Hader, who hosted on Oct. 11. Jim Carrey also piqued excitement, with 7% of all "excited" reactions for the season mentioning his Oct. 25 hosting gig.
Out of every host and musical guest from the season to date, who generated the most reactions? That would be The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, who accounted for 8% of all reactions to this season of Saturday Night Live. Reactions mostly came from the marathon eight-minute medley of songs from his album Plectrumelectrum he performed on the Nov. 1 episode. Prince was also the lead driver of “love” and “good” reactions for the season.
Following Prince in overall reaction buzz was Chris Rock, who generated controversy with his comments about the World Trade Center during his opening monologue. Though his remarks were polarizing, Rock was still the top driver of “funny” reactions over the course of the season, with 11% of all "funny" reactions mentioning his name or his handle. Jim Carrey was the second funniest, accounting for with just over 6% of "funny" reactions.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Twitter if there weren't some backlash to Saturday Night Live; “hate” tweets represented 11% of all emotional reactions to SNL, largely in response to Ariana Grande’s musical performance in the premiere episode.
New cast members Pete Davidson and Leslie Jones have also proved popular with the SNL audience, with “love” and “funny” reactions representing 60% of buzz about each comedian.
"Congratulations" represented 7% of reactions to SNL for the season to date, with many viewers praising the efforts of the season’s hosts. A good portion of “congrats” reactions were also expressed for the happy couple of Stefon and Seth Meyers, as Stefon shared some exciting news -- he’s pregnant!
We’ll be checking in with SNL’s 40th year throughout the season.
